JOHANNESBURG BACH CHOIR

NEWS LETTER FEBRUARY 2011

Dear members of the choir and other interested parties.

My very best greetings for 2011. I sincerely believe that the choir is headed for a wonderful year.

Next Concert

WE are presently rehearsing for our concert to be held on Sunday afternoon the 17th April 2011 at 15:00.

The programme is as follows:

Faure†††††††††††††† Requiem

Rutter ††††††††††††† The Lord bless you and keep you

Faure †††††††††††††† Cantique de Jean Racine.

The concert will take place at the Saint Martinís Church in Rosebank.

Last Concert.

It was with regret that I was unable to attend the Concert held in November last year. I have heard from friends that the afternoon was a great success.

It is unfortunate that we did not cover costs, and lost a relatively small amount.

End of year party

Avril and I attended the party and we certainly enjoyed ourselves. It is a pity that so few members of the choir were able to be with us. Your committee will set the date for this yearís party well in advance so that we can diarise the event.

The Choir Committee

During 2010 Pamela Werrell and Tony Cantrell were elected onto the committee.I take this opportunity of welcoming their future input. It is unfortunate that after a long term of being the leader of the Bass section Mike decided to take a sabbatical and resigned as a member of the committee. Iím sure I speak on behalf of all when I say that we are delighted with Mikeís subsequent return to the choir.

The full committee is as follows:

Tony Cantrell†††††††††††††††††††† Leader Basses†††††††††††††††††† Vanessa Pikor†††††††††††††††††† Leader Sopranos

Reiner Fossati†††††††††††††††††† Concert Organiser†††††††††† Lucy Wiseman†††††††††††††††††† Treasurer

Dieter Nolte††††††††††††††††††††† Leader Tenors†††††††††††††††††† Jane Abrahams†††††††††††††††† Secretary

Flo Morley††††††††††††††††††††††††† Leader Altos††††††††††††††††††††† Pamela Werrell††††††††††††††† Membership

Loraine Gordon †††††††††††††† Public Relations†††††††††††††† Sydney Derman††††††††††††††† Chairman

Membership

It is important for a number of reasons that we need more new and younger members to join our choir.

The choir used to comprise of 80 members and we are now down to 40 odd. As a direct result, we do not cover our monthly operating costs. We have had to increase the monthly contribution to R100. I understand that this may create a hardship for some of the members, and as a result, the committee has decided that I should hear from those individuals who would like to apply for reduced membership fees. Please feel free to approach me individually, but please bear in mind that we are short of funds.

We are seriously short of tenors. THIS section needs boosting urgently.

I ask you to please help and look for new choristers. We should all try to bring at least one new member to the choir this year. Please make this your choral new yearís resolution.

Future 2011 concerts

Our Music Director Tim Roberts has recommended our two other concerts this year as follows:

Winter†††††† MonteverdiVespers

Spring†††††††† PoulencGloria

We will at a later stage confirm both the concert programmes and the dates.

General

I would be sadly remiss in not recognising Timís contribution to the choir. We have made great strides in improving the quality of our performances. Iím sure you will all agree that he has inspired us to greater heights and it is also very comfortable working together.

It is still intended that we make an application to Lotto for funds. This will mean that we will have to join forces with another choir as and when necessary, without losing our identity.

A special committee has been formed to make the Lotto application. If you feel you could make a contribution please speak to me?

Our website is up and running and is being kept up to date. Visit it at www.jhbbachoir.t35.com.

On behalf of all I express our sincerest thanks to Reiner for his hard work and dedication in achieving this goal. Thank you Reiner!

We look forward to the rest of the year with anticipation.

Kind regards to all,

Sydney Derman
